Performance analysis of SPAD-based optical wireless communication with OFDM

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) optical wireless communication (OWC). The SPAD operates Geiger mode and can act as photon counting receiver obviating need for transimpedance amplifier. Although provide higher sensitivity compared to traditional linear photodetectors, it suffers from dead-time-induced nonlinearity. To improve data rates SPAD-based OWC systems, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) be employed. This paper provides comprehensive theoretical analysis systems using direct-current-biased OFDM signaling considering effects signal clipping, nonlinearity, signal-dependent shot noise. An equivalent additive Gaussian noise channel model is proposed describe performance system. statistics analytical expressions signal-to-noise ratio bit error rate are derived closed forms. By means extensive numerical results, impact unique nonlinearity on system investigated. results demonstrate new insights into different power regimes reliable operation even well beyond saturation level.
